Strokes gained at the Quicken Loans National: Justin Rose gained 7.2 strokes on the field on approach shots

Justin Rose won the Quicken Loans National on the strength of his tournament-leading approach shots. Rose gained 10.6 strokes on the field in his victory, with a gain of 7.2 strokes coming from his approach shots, 1.9 strokes from his driving, 0.9 strokes from his putting, and 0.7 strokes from his short game.

A key for Rose in the final round was the difficult par-4 11th hole.   Rose was spot-on when he said, “When you make three there, you pretty much [gain a] shot and a half, at least, I’d imagine.” The field average on No. 11 was 4.65 strokes in the final round, so Rose’s three gained 1.65 strokes on the field. His second shot—an approach shot from 210 yards in the fairway to 5 feet—by itself gained one stroke on the field.

This year tournament winners have beaten the field by an average of 3.4 strokes per round. Rose won by gaining only 2.7 strokes per round on the field. The lower value reflects the bunched final leaderboard: Fifty four players finished within 10 strokes of Rose at the end of the tournament. By contrast, when Webb Simpson won at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, he beat the field by 4.5 strokes per round and only 14 players finished within ten strokes of Simpson.

Earlier in the week, all eyes were on Tiger Woods after his return from back surgery in late March. Woods missed the cut by four strokes, shooting rounds of 74 and 75. The field average was 72.36 in round one and 72.04 in round two. Compared to the field, Woods lost 1.64 strokes in round one and another 2.96 strokes in round two, for an average loss of 2.3 strokes per round. A strokes gained analysis shows where Woods was rusty. Woods lost 1.6 strokes per round with his short game (shots starting within 100 yards of the hole, excluding putts) and another 1.3 strokes per round with his putting.
