Strokes gained at the Wyndham Championship: Villegas wins for the first time in four years on the strength of his approach shots

Camilo Villegas shot a closing 63 to pass seven players and win for the first time since 2010. Villegas bettered the field by an average of 3.4 strokes per round for the tournament. (The field averaged 0.9 strokes under par per round and Villegas averaged 4.3 strokes under par per round, with the difference representing his 3.4 strokes gained per round on the field.) Villegas’s approach shots accounted for 44 percent of his total gain on the field. Putting account for another 29 percent.

In his opening 63, Villegas gained 3.6 strokes on the field with his approach shots. He shot a matching 63 in his closing round, gaining 3.3 strokes with his approach shots. A few examples from his final round will illustrate his stellar approach play. On hole 2, Villegas hit from 145 yards in the fairway to 7 feet (gain 0.5 strokes) to set up a birdie. On hole 4, Villegas hit from 148 yards in the fairway to 4 feet (gain 0.7 strokes) to set up another birdie. On hole 5, Villegas hit from 183 yards in the fairway to 5 feet (gain 0.8 strokes) to set up an eagle. On hole 8, Villegas hit from 122 yards in the fairway to 8 feet (gain 0.3 strokes) to set up another birdie.

Stellar approach play alone isn’t enough to win on the PGA Tour. Villegas capitalized on his approach shots with putting that gained an average of one stroke per round on the field. Villegas’s 47-foot birdie bomb on hole 6 of the final round gained 1.1 strokes alone.

Because Villegas’s bookend 63s were so different than his middle rounds of 69 and 68, it is helpful to look at a breakdown of his strokes gained by round. The results show that poor approach play hurt his round 2 scoring and poor putting hurt his round 3 scoring:

Strokes gained per round (ranks in parentheses) Rank
Camilo Villegas Total Drive Appr Short Putt out of
All rounds 3.4 (1) 0.6 (14) 1.5 (4) 0.3 (25) 1.0 (16) 77
Round 1 6.7 (1) 1.2 (10) 3.6 (2) 0.0 (73) 1.9 (16) 156
Round 2 0.0 (83) 0.3 (69) -1.9 (141) 0.5 (43) 1.2 (46) 155
Round 3 1.2 (27) 0.7 (14) 1.0 (20) 0.8 (16) -1.3 (59) 77
Round 4 5.6 (1) 0.1 (42) 3.3 (2) 0.1 (33) 2.1 (5) 77

Here’s how Villegas’s play in the Wyndham Championship compares to his play throughout the season:
