Streelman’s seven straight birdies steals Travelers’ title: Streelman ranked second in SG-Driving and third in SG-Putting

Kevin Streelman birdied the last seven holes to capture the Traveler’s Championship yesterday. After making a putt for par on No. 10, Streelman looked at his caddie and said, “Let’s go shoot 29 on the back.” Turns out, Streelman did one better, carding an inward 7-under 28. He’s the first player in TOUR history to win while carding seven straight birdies to close a tournament.

For the four rounds, Streelman beat the field average by 13.4 total strokes (3.36 strokes per round). In his remarkable final seven holes he gained 6.3 strokes on the field, which breaks down this way: 3.9 strokes from putting, 1.4 strokes from approach shots, 1.1 strokes from driving, and -0.1 strokes from short game.

For the tournament, Streelman ranked second in strokes gained-driving and third in strokes gained-putting. Ranks can be misleading, for Streelman gained more strokes on the field with his putting (7.7 strokes) than with his driving (3.9 strokes). In the tournament, putting contributed 58% of Streelman’s total gain on the field (7.7 strokes out of 13.4 total).

K.J. Choi, who tied for second, lost 0.7 strokes per round—or 2.8 strokes for the tournament—with his driving. In round 1 he drove it in the water on the short par-4 15th hole. In round 3 he put his tee shot in the water on the par-5 13th hole.

Here’s a strokes gained box score for the top ten finishers at the Travelers Championship:
